Why Do You Need This Book?
I wrote “When Pigs Fly” because there was not a book on the market that adequately addressed the specific challenges faced by the owner of an “impossible” dog – the independent dog who has no interest in being trained.
There are many excellent dog training books on the market. They give very good advice and follow the latest scientific application of learning theory. For many dog owners, those books are fantastic and do the trick. However, there are some dogs that just don’t appear to get it, no matter how faithfully their owners read and follow the directions. The problem is that those books assume a certain amount of interest on the part of the dog. People who have “impossible” dogs (often hounds and terriers, but sometimes Border Collies and Golden Retrievers, too) are left there, clutching the training book, while their dogs ignore them and run off to amuse themselves with whatever mischief they can find. When Pigs Fly offers the key to working with “impossible” dogs.

The response to the book has been thrilling. It has remained on the top of Dogwise’s bestseller list since the week it debuted. From a Dogwise newsletter:
We are so pleased with the fabulous response we are getting to our newest published title, When Pigs Fly - Training Success with Impossible Dogs, by Jane Killion. We have sold more copies over the first weeks of this book than any other we have published by an author not named Rugaas! And the reviews customers are posting have been consistently positive. So if you have been on vacation and have not heard about this book yet, check it out - especially if you own a breed of dog that you consider hard to train.
The consistent comments from readers are ones of relief that, finally, there is a book that gives methods that work for their “impossible” dog. Several people have written that they have spent hundreds of dollars on training books in the past, but never found one to help them until When Pigs Fly. I feel I have served a group of people and dogs that did not have much hope before reading my book. That makes me very happy! |

I am also delighted by the response that the professional dog training community has had to the book. Most notably, Jean Donaldson, Karen Pryor, and Morgan Spector, icons of modern dog training, have all praised the book. These are people that I look up to and respect, so their good opinion of the book carries a lot of significance for me. |
